TPP trade pact: Nations seek to build momentum ahead of Atlanta talks

WASHINGTON — The 12 participating nations in the Trans-Pacific Partnership talks are busy preparing for what many see as a crucial meeting toward reaching an agreement on the free trade pact.

The U.S. Trade Representative said Thursday that a two-day ministerial meeting will be held in Atlanta starting Wednesday. To lay the groundwork for the key gathering, chief negotiators from the 12 countries including Japan will meet in that U.S. city from Saturday to Tuesday. They are expected to try to narrow the gap on divisive issues including automobile tariffs and the protection period for pharmaceutical data.

U.S. President Barack Obama has been pushing for a broad agreement by early next year. Obama spoke by phone Wednesday with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, reaffirming the importance of bringing negotiations to a swift conclusion.

The countries failed to strike a broad agreement at a ministerial meeting in July.
