Actor Harrison Ford, well known for playing Indiana Jones and Han Solo in Star Wars, was hurt when his plane crashed at a California golf course. He was the pilot.
The 72 year old actor was conscious and breathing when rescue crews stabilized and took him to the hospital. He is now in fair to moderate condition. He has cuts to his head and other light injuries and there is no word why his plane crashed at 5:20 EST. He was he solo pilot.
His son Ben, was fast to report on Twitter his father was “battered, but OK!”
An employee of the golf course, and first on the scene, put a blanket under Ford’s hip and reported there was blood all over his face. There were also two doctors treating him.
The plane was a single engine Ryan Aeronautical ST3KR and crashed on the golf course shortly after taking off from the airport at Santa Monica. This was confirmed by a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigator, Patrick Jones. The pilot, Ford, said his engine lost power and he clipped the top of a tree as he tried to bring the plane back to the airport.
Originally, Ford’s injuries were deemed critical and then characterized as serious as he had severe lacerations and possible fractures. His condition was quickly upgraded. He is an avid pilot of both planes and helicopters. In 1999 he was in a serious crash of his Bell chopper in Santa Clara, CA. That crash was blamed on a mechanical failure.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will join the NTSB in the crash investigation. The Plane, a vintage model, has no black box or recorder.
