India. Yes India has sent a mission to land on the red giant Mars. This means India has beaten the world and has become the first country to complete a trip to Mars on its maiden attempt. This is something not even NASA could do.
The Mars Orbiter Mission, an economically and cost efficient mission priced at a mere $74 million is a boost to India’s fifty year old space program. Their new prime minister, Narendra Modi, has a goal to expand this program with even better technology and infrastructure. He wants to make it a contender with NASA and other space agencies like Russian and China.
This spacecraft joins a small and elite group of nations who have made it successfully, but not on their maiden voyages, to Mars. These countries are the Unites States, Europe and Russia. India did it on their first try. These other countries failed on multiple trues before getting it right and landing.
Celebrations began in the southern city of Bangalore with Modi in attendance as soon as communications confirmed the probe had entered the Martian orbit. Modi was elated saying India has reached Mars. History has been made and India has achieved what others said was near impossible.
India’s Space Research Organization is looking to get an economic boost from Modi as he wants to support and boost the country’s overall economic foundation. His newly elected government is looking to push through economic reforms to help curb the current account deficit as well as bring inflation under control. Modi also hopes to spark a massive infrastructure and technological revolution to modernize India’s technological and manufacturing plants. This successful Mars mission will help Modi in his quest.
Modi is famous for being able to improve a region’s manufacturing base, as he did it for his home province in Gujarat. Many are hoping he can repeat that performance on the national scene, especially since his party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has control over the parliament.
