European Markets to Open Higher as the UK is Closed

Financial markets in the United Kingdom are closed for the spring bank holiday and markets in the United States are also closed for Memorial Day. Investors are taking their cues from a flat day in Asia and falling oil prices.

As of 7:00 am London time, the FTSE 100 is closed for a public holiday. Futures in Germany are up seven points and futures in France are up three points.

Early Asian trade was basically flat. Both the Chinese and Taiwanese markets were closed for holidays on Monday. Today US financial markets will also be closed.

European investors are shrugging off geopolitical worries stemming from a new North Korean missile test over the weekend. Also weighing on sentiment, the oil price saw a small selloff. Brent crude was down 0.2 percent, just above $52 per barrel.

Corporate Headlines in European Focus

Corporate headlines out of the United Kingdom, will be in focus today. British Airways resumed flights from London after a critical IT snafu wreaked havoc over the weekend. The parent company of British Airways, trades on the London exchange so will be quiet today.

In British politics, the Conservative Party has a 14 percentage point lead over the opposition Labor Party. Elections are due on June 8. These numbers are from an ICM opinion poll. They were published in the Sun newspaper over the weekend.
