Another Japanese detained in China in June

TOKYO (Kyodo) — A Japanese woman in her 50s has been detained in China in June in addition to three Japanese citizens already known to have been held by Chinese authorities in recent months, a Japanese government source said Saturday.

     The woman is in the business of operating a Japanese language school in Tokyo, but the purpose of her visit to China is not known, according to the source. She has frequently visited China recently, the source said.

     She was held in Shanghai by national security officials, the source said. The charges against her are not known.

     The Chinese government said Sept. 30 the country’s authorities arrested two men from Japan on suspicion of spying. Sources familiar with the matter have said the two individuals are believed to have been collecting information at the request of Japan’s Public Security Intelligence Agency.

     A different Japanese government source has said a resident of Sapporo in his 60s was detained in Beijing in June.
