Amid rising protests: Turkey keeps quiet on bombing investigation details

ISTANBUL — Turkey is keeping quiet on details of its search for suspects in Saturdays terrorist bombings in the capital city Ankara, clamping down on the flow of information as protests against government security policies swell.

The investigation into the suicide blasts, which occurred near a railway station in the heart of Ankara, is centered on the radical Islamic State, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Monday in a television interview. Few other details have been made public. Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said Monday evening that two bombers were likely responsible for the attack, but declined to release further information, citing a court order keeping such details from being made public.

The prime minister’s office put out an order immediately following the attack prohibiting circulation of information on the bombings. Television news stations have continued reporting regardless, but have refrained from showing video of the attack circulating on social media and have adopted other voluntary restrictions. Some press sources have also reported intermittent problems connecting to Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites.

The government is reporting 97 dead from the attack. But dozens were badly injured, and so the number of dead could grow. Organizations of doctors, lawyers and others say that the death toll has already risen above 100.

Reports are circulating that one suspect in Saturday’s bombings may come from the same town as a suspect in a similar bombing that occurred in the southeastern city of Suruc in July. Involvement by the Islamic State is suspected in both cases. The suspect in the Ankara attack had apparently traveled to Syria and been involved with the Islamic State.

Protesters in Ankara and Istanbul continue to criticize the government’s domestic security measures, with some calling the attack a failure of Turkey’s dealings with Syria under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Several clashes with police forces have also been reported.

Erdogan has kept silent and out of the public eye since issuing a written statement following the bombings. The government is eager to keep the attack from staining its image, given a general election slated for Nov. 1 that could put the ruling party out of power.
