2015 Nobel: Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet awarded Peace Prize
TOKYO — The 2015 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet for their “decisive contribution” to building a pluralistic democracy in Tunisia in the wake of the Jasmine Revolution in 2011.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo commended the Tunisian democracy group for enabling the establishment of a constitutional system of government “guaranteeing fundamental rights for the entire population, irrespective of gender, political conviction or religious belief,” in the space of just a few years.
“The Quartet was formed in the summer of 2013, when the democratization process was in danger of collapsing as a result of political assassinations and widespread social unrest. The group established an alternative peaceful political process at a time when the country was on the brink of civil war,” a representative of the committee announced.
